Sandsend Beach

Sandsend beach is without doubt our favourite beach in and around the Scarborough area. Sandsend beach is about 23 miles from Scarborough, which takes about 40 mins car. Sandsend beach is not only great for the kids but for dog walkers too. There is a great walk up Sandsend beach that stretches about 3 miles that leads up to Whitby.

Our kids love to play in the small streams that run over Sandsend beach into the sea. Our kids are 2 and 5 years old and spend hours pulling each other in a dinghy up and down the stream.

There is a wood near Sandsend beach that the stream flows through out onto the beach. If you want to go and explore near Sandsend beach there are three castles in the wood. Sandsend beach is a great day out.

Our Sandsend Beach Snaps

Road from Whitto Sandsend beach

The photo above shows the road that leads down from Whitto Sandsend beach. You can park for free in these parking spaces but you need to get there early, before 9am in the high season (this has now changed, you will now have to pay to park)

This road runs across the top of Sandsend beach so these parking spaces fill up fast. There are two other car parks that you can use that are close to Sandsend beach if you don’t get a space here.

Bridge over Sandsend beach

As you continue down the road shown in our first photo you will see the bridge that passes over the stream that runs onto Sandsend beach. Just to the left of this shot there is another car park.

Stream that runs over Sandsend beach

The photo above shows the stream that runs down through the woods and onto Sandsend beach. This is the view over the other side of the bride of the view shown in the photo above.

car park at Sandsend beach

The shot above shows the car park that is a sharp turn on your left as you pass over the bridge. The last time we went to Sandsend beach we parked in this car park and it was £4 for the day. This is the closest car park to Sandsend beach and is the East Row car park of the Mulgrave Estate.

Sandsend beach view 1

Above shows the view looking back from Sandsend beach at the bridge and the stream. When we go to Sandsend beach we normally sit at the other side of this wall so that we are right next to the stream.

Sandsend beach view 2

This is a lovely shot of the kids playing in their dinghies and enjoying the sunshine on Sandsend beach in August 2012. It’s great for the kids because the stream is very shallow and you can sit close by, it is safer to do so to keep an eye on them.

Sandsend beach view 3

The photo above shows the stream as it enters the sea on Sandsend beach. If you were to walk right of this shot up Sandsend beach you would head towards Whitby. There are a few small cafes that you can sit outside and admire the view of Sandsend beach.

Sandsend beach south view

The photo above shows the view as you look south down Sandsend beach towards Whitby. This is the 3-mile stretch of sand that you can see that is great for walking the dog along.

Sandsend beach north view

The snap above shows the view looking north up Sandsend beach towards Runswick bay. If you were to walk this way up Sandsend beach you would come round to the Scarborough council car park at the bottom of Lythe bank.

view of Sandsend beach from sbc car park

The shot above was taken from the Scarborough council car park looking south down Sandsend beach towards Whitby. If you follow the road round to the right of this shot there are some small shops that sell dinghies and newspapers.

We don’t normally use the Scarborough council car park when we go to Sandsend beach as it is a bit of a walk round to the beach. If you have to use it I think it is £5 to park in for the day.

If you are on holiday in Scarborough then it is well worth a trip out to Sandsend beach, our kids love it and so will yours.
